coordination with the Conejo Valley Parks & Recreation
Department we offer this class. It is available to newcomers
only. You must sign up with Parks and Recreation. Sign
up online at their website (search on "horse"
in their programs) or call them at (805) 495-6471.

This first class will
be an introduction to horsemanship.
Topics will include:
Lecture on the proper and safe handling of horses
Grooming lesson with a discussion about the grooming tools,
their uses and benefits
Tacking lesson with emphasis on proper fitting of the tack
There will be no riding in this class

Week Two:
Students will be assigned horses
Lecture on the proper and safe handling or horses while mounted
Students will learn to control and maneuver the horse at the
walk in an arena, if ability warrants trotting will be introduced.

Week Three:
Continuation from week two with control exercises at walk and
trot
Posting the trot will be taught with a discussion as to why
it is important to ride with a proper position
Introduction to Hunt Seat Equitation terms |

Week Four:
Continuation from week three with exercises to increase strength
and balance
Maneuvering around obstacles at the walk and trot
Overview of what was taught in previous weeks
Lecture on the behavioral aspect of horses |

Week Five:
Continuation from week four with exercises to increase strength
and balance
If ability warrants cantering will be introduced (some students
may not be ready to canter)
Overview of what was taught in previous weeks
Discussion on leads and balance at the canter |

Week Six:
Final lesson of the session
Overview of the previous five weeks
Work on perfection position at walk trot and canter
Discussion of rider’s goals |
